With the popularity of Marie Kondo’s “spark joy” message exploding around the world this year, thanks to her New York Times best seller book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and her Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”, the world is seeing an uptick in the activity known as decluttering. As “spark joy” memes are sprouting up all over the internet, the professional organizing industry is growing on the map.
The organizing industry has been around for a minute (yes, a whole minute)! But, if you’re new to the concept of organizing as a service that you can invest in to help improve your life, you may be scratching your head and wondering, “What do professional organizers really do, is it really like that Netflix show that I just binged, and why might I want to hire one?”
Although the term “tidying up” is thrown around quite often these days, it’s important to note that professional organizing is different than a cleaning service. In the most simplistic terms, organizers help you to declutter and create functional organizational systems for your things, space, and life, and they can also coach you along on your journey.
Marie Kondo’s Konmari method is becoming well known, however, it’s just one of the methods of decluttering and organizing. Like searching for an interior designer, or even a therapist, there are many different methods, styles, and personalities of organizers. Some organizers focus more on the decluttering aspect and function, while some may also add a focus on styling and aesthetics.
For the decluttering aspect, I love the idea of keeping only things that spark joy. I also like to think of my personal organizing style as being a bridge between function and design.
So, why hire a professional organizer?
Do a quick Google search, and you will find some of the following common reasons: you need help with decluttering and downsizing, preparing to sell and stage your home to attract the best buyers, moving to a new home and getting settled in quickly, getting organized for an estate sale, major life changes – such as a baby on the way, reorganizing your whole home, decluttering and getting organized during a major renovation or interior design project, etc.
In our busy, non-stop lives, these can be major, stressful situations where having an objective professional is quite beneficial. And, while these are all totally valid, Googleable reasons why someone might hire me or another professional organizer to help them get it together, here are five additional, fresh reasons to add to that list:
1. You feel like you’re Sarah Jessica Parker starring in the movie, “I Don’t Know How She Does It”.
If you’ve seen the movie, you may remember the scene where she’s pulling toys, gadgets, and everything out of her purse except the kitchen sink, and she still can’t find the ONE thing that she’s looking for.
If you’re anything like the main character in this movie, you’re the one who usually has it all together, intricately juggling 10 plates in the air while balancing one foot on a skateboard and holding an insanely hot cup of coffee. You fear that when one plate drops to the floor and breaks into tiny pieces, the whole stressful juggling act will start to fall apart.
You’re incredibly busy, you feel so overwhelmed with #allthethings, the clutter is causing more stress than necessary, and you just want some help getting your house beautifully in order again so you can have somewhere to calmly relax. Let a professional organizer take a couple of those plates, while you continue trailblazing your career without stress and worry on the home front.
2. You run a home business, or you have a work from home job.
Let’s face it! These days, we live in an extremely hectic “always on” economy, and life as we know it is changing at the speed of iPhone releases. Work-life balance is an unachievable dream of the past that is headed for the outs, as flexible work-life integration creeps into more and more lifestyles as technology advances. While this new lifestyle is a welcome change for many, it definitely has its challenges.
When you mix home and office all in one space, how do you keep the boundaries between the two? Also, if you have clients or business partners visiting you at your home office, do you feel confident in the image you are presenting from whatever glimpse of your home that they may see? If you’re struggling to combine both your home and professional lives beautifully under one roof, a professional organizer can help you create a space that is both functional and comfortable for you, your family, and your clients.
3. You’re a creative spirit, and the clutter is driving you insane!
Whether you’re blazing your creative trails full-time or you’re a part-time creative by night as a means to feed your hungry soul, your environment can majorly affect your mind. There’s an argument out there that suggests clutter can help creativity, but the other side of the argument is that a cluttered and unorganized space can feel frantic, heavy, stressful, and can actually hinder creativity.
I’m an advocate of an organized mess while working on your creative projects, however, I believe that it makes all the difference when you have beautiful organizational systems in place so there is a home for all of the mess to go when you’re done for the day. It feels great to work on your passion projects when your mind isn’t held hostage by the stress of a cluttered space! I truly believe that when you clear the visual clutter, your mind feels lighter and has more space to reach that desirable state of flow. If you’re ready to open up that creative block that your clutter is causing and you’re not sure where to start, a professional organizer can help you create beautiful homes for all that stuff that’s stressing you out.
4. You love frequenting The Container Store, but when you get home, you’re at a loss for what to do with all those organizing bins and products that you just bought! So, they end up just piling up and collecting dust.
You get all excited when you go into The Container Store to get all the magical products that will FINALLY help you get your life in order. They are supposed to solve all your problems! The problem is, you get home and you’re frustrated because the magical items that you just bought are not working out in the way that you romanticized in your mind.
So, you go and get more magical things from Target and IKEA. You get home for the tenth time and you’re still frustrated that it is not going how you imagined. It may be time to call a professional who knows the ins and outs of ALL THE MAGICAL THINGS and can help you put the puzzle pieces together.
5. You dream of living that beautiful organized lifestyle you idolize on Instagram and Pinterest, but you just flat out don’t like the process of getting organized or you’re too overwhelmed and have no idea where to start.
You love scrolling through all the beautiful images of organized things, the great Pinterest-worthy ideas, and all the beautiful bins, baskets, and labels… Your reality: Pinterest fails, getting overwhelmed, and hating the journey to get there... It’s like, you’d love to have six pack abs, but you hate doing sit-ups! Of course, realistically, there will be some work and effort on your part to get and stay organized, but at least you could let a professional organizer create a training plan and do most of the sit-ups for you!
